Jaime Munguía, 26, had to fight extremely hard to gain one of the most crucial victories of his career. It was tough all the way, as Ukrainian Derevyanchenko was a demanding, unyielding opponent.

Derevyanchenko gave Munguía a torrid first round test sample of what was to come, but the resolute Tijuana fighter weathered a storm.

Especially the fifth and sixth rounds made you wonder if Munguia could have be knocked out, but the Mexican showed his extraordinary mettle and brave heart to come through and magnificently fight back.

In the final round, when the fight was evenly poised, hanging in the balance, Munguia decisively landed a crunching left hook to the liver that forced the Ukrainian to take a knee and with it, a count.

After a highly competitive fight the balance tipped in favor of Munguia, who did the necessary to win victory over the Ukrainian warrior by unanimous decision.

With this victory, Munguía conquered the 168-pound WBC Silver Belt and improved his record to 42 fights won, with 33 of them by way of knockout.
