The World Boxing Council (WBC) is the most prestigious boxing organization in the world, and was created in 1963 in Mexico City, the capital of Mexico. The organization is headed by Mauricio Sulaiman, who was unanimously elected by the Council of the organization in 2014, after the death of his father, Don Jose Sulaiman. He was the constant President of the organization for 36 years from 1975 until his death. His legendary personality is highly respected to this day because it was under his leadership that a number of positive changes took place in professional boxing.
The main motto of the organization is «My blood is green, my heart is gold!», It symbolizes the color of the belt and the principles of humanity, justice, and at the same time courage not only in sports, but in everyday life, which WBC professes.
The idea of opening the WBC Ukraine office was born long before the opening. After the 56th WBC Convention in Kyiv, the organizer and host was Vitali Klitschko, the only “eternal” WBC Champion in history and the current mayor of Kyiv. It was then that the idea was born, and the first steps in founding WBC Ukraine were taken.
Already a year ago at the 57th WBC Convention in Cancun, Mykola Kovalchuk discussed with the organizing team the opening of an office in Ukraine, with the support of the President of the National Professional Boxing League of Ukraine Mykhailo Zavialov and WBC Ambassador Chico Lopez.
On August 10th, 2021, a historic video conference was held in honor of the opening of WBC Ukraine with the participation of WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman, members of the WBC Board of Directors, President of the National Professional Boxing League of Ukraine Mykhailo Zavialov, Vice-President of the National Professional Boxing League of Ukraine Alina Shaternikova, and Champion, WBC Ambassador Oleksandr Gvozdyk. From that day, the Ukrainian office started its activities, and continues them until today. The head of the representative office is Mykola Kovalchuk, who put a lot of effort into the opening of WBC Ukraine, and the development of professional and amateur boxing in Ukraine.
Currently, the entire team of the WBC Ukraine office has directed their efforts to help Ukraine during the war, and started the “WBC Cares Ukraine” Charitable Fund.
