Undisputed middleweight champion Claressa Shields (14-0-0, 2 KO), comprehensively defeated Maricela Cornejo (16-6-0, 6 KO) to retain her championships at Little Ceasars Arena in Detroit, in United States.
She came out strong and dominated all the rounds never encountering any real problems. Cornejo was more offensive in the early rounds, but Shields regained her advantage by fighting in the center of the ring.
Cornejo tried to move in, via her jab, but Shields punished her with two fisted attacks often landing solid right hands.
The champion cut the Mexican-American boxer over the right eye in the fifth round with a powerful right hook, driving her against the ropes several times.
The Judges’ scorecards reflected the sheer dominance in the ring. Undefeated Claressa retained via unanimous decision by scores of 100-89 and 100-90 twice.
