Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez, successfully defended his Undisputed World Super Middleweight Championship, defeating tough British John “The Gorilla” Ryder by unanimous decision, at the Akron Stadium in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.
There were 12 intense rounds, in which Álvarez dominated, but it was not easy because Ryder was a rival who resisted lustily.
The judges’ cards favored “Canelo” with advantages of 120-107, 118-109 and 118-109.
John battled round after round, showing a lot of heart and courage to withstand Alvarez’s power punching. Canelo sent Ryder to the canvas in the fifth round, but could not finish him due to the great physical condition of the British fighter.
“Ryder is a warrior. But I came to do a great fight, and this was the fight that I delivered to my audience in Guadalajara”, - said Álvarez at the end of the fight.
“I am happy for the show that I gave to my team, to my family, to the entire town of Guadalajara and to all of Mexico.
I want to continue making boxing history, we are going for other fights with important rivals. We must be proud of our country, of our state, with the whole family.”
With this result, cheered by 55,000 fans at the Akron Stadium, “Canelo” Álvarez improved his record to 59-2-2, with 39 knockouts, while Ryder fell to 32-6, with 18 knockouts.
