WBC Unveils Special Tollan Topiltzin Belt for Garcia vs Benn
The WBC officially unveiled the commemorative Tollan Topiltzin belt during its traditional Coffee Tuesday press conference, and it will be awarded to the winner of the highly anticipated WBC welterweight championship showdown between Ryan Garcia and Conor Benn.
Since 2017, the WBC has created special championship belts to honor Mexico’s history, art, and traditions. These unique masterpieces are presented at major fights held during the Cinco de Mayo and Mexican Independence Day celebrations.
WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán expressed his excitement about the unveiling of the new belt, highlighting the craftsmanship behind its creation.
“This is one of the most special belts we have ever produced. It was crafted by Mexican artisans from the state of Hidalgo,” he said.
The name Tollan Topiltzin is rooted in Toltec heritage. “Tollan” was the original name of the ancient Toltec capital and eventually became synonymous with greatness, knowledge, and artistic excellence. Meanwhile, “Topiltzin,” meaning “Our Noble Lord,” forms part of the name Ce Ácatl Topiltzin Quetzalcóatl, the legendary ruler associated with the golden age of Tula.”
The belt incorporates several elements representative of Mexican culture, including natural obsidian featured in the main plate and decorative details, genuine leather traditionally used in WBC championship belts, and gold-plated metal reliefs that provide elegance and durability to the design.
The Tollan Topiltzin belt joins the prestigious collection of WBC special belts, celebrating Mexico’s rich cultural heritage through the sport of boxing. The ceremony included some spectacular pe-Hispanic style dancing in full traditional costume.
