Five Years of WBC Ukraine: A Story of Development, Unity, and a New Chapter in Ukrainian Professional Boxing

On August 10, 2026, WBC Ukraine celebrates its first major anniversary — five years since its foundation.

It was on August 10, 2021, that WBC Ukraine was officially established as the national representative office of the World Boxing Council in Ukraine. Since its foundation, the organization has been headed by Mykola Kovalchuk, who represents Ukrainian professional boxing within the international WBC family and has consistently worked to develop professional boxing in accordance with global standards.

Over the past five years, WBC Ukraine has grown from a newly established office into an organization that has become one of the key centers for the development of professional boxing in Ukraine. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic and, later, russia’s full-scale invasion, the office never ceased its activities. On the contrary, this period became a time of new challenges, responsible decisions, and major sporting, educational, and social projects.

Development of Professional Boxing

From the very beginning, WBC Ukraine has worked to create new opportunities for Ukrainian boxers. One of its main areas of activity has been organizing professional boxing events and title fights under the auspices of the World Boxing Council.

Through the work of the Ukrainian office, athletes have had the opportunity to compete for the WBC Ukraine, WBC International, WBC Silver, WBC Youth Silver, WBC Youth, and WBC Francophone titles, opening the way to the WBC world rankings, international recognition, and opportunities to compete for the most prestigious championship belts.

Over the years, Ukrainian boxers have repeatedly demonstrated their high level of skill, while title fights held under the auspices of WBC Ukraine have become an important part of the development of professional boxing in the country.

WBC Ukraine Champions

Over the past five years, the history of the national WBC Ukraine title has been established.

The organization’s first champion was Serhii Radchenko, who opened a new chapter in Ukrainian professional boxing.

Over the years, the WBC Ukraine championship belt has also been won by Vitalii Stalchenko, Andrii Boryshpolets, Vladyslav Hela, Yanis Kurylenko, Arsenii Reznichenko, and Taras Bondarchuk. Each of them has contributed to the development of the national title and the promotion of Ukrainian professional boxing both at home and internationally.

Women’s boxing holds a special place in the history of WBC Ukraine. Under the organization’s auspices, Anastasiia Petrenko became the first female WBC Ukraine Champion, as well as the first Ukrainian woman to win the WBC Francophone title. Her victories marked important milestones for Ukrainian women’s professional boxing and once again demonstrated that Ukrainian female athletes can successfully compete at the international level.

Ukraine at the WBC Boxing Grand Prix

One of the most important international events in recent years has been the WBC Boxing Grand Prix — a major international tournament created by the World Boxing Council to discover a new generation of promising professional boxers.

WBC Ukraine actively worked to ensure that Ukrainian athletes had the opportunity to participate in this prestigious project and represent Ukraine on the international stage.

With the support of WBC Ukraine, Vitalii Stalchenko, Pavlo Yuskiv, Oleksandr Solomennikov, Ihor Semonchuk, Danylo Lozan, and Maksym Molodan took part in the tournament.

Danylo Lozan delivered a particularly successful performance, reaching the tournament final and becoming the WBC Boxing Grand Prix silver medalist. This achievement became one of the best results by a Ukrainian boxer within this international project and once again demonstrated the high level of the Ukrainian professional boxing school.

Legal Support for Athletes

One of the important areas of WBC Ukraine’s work is the legal protection and support of Ukrainian boxers.

The organization provides athletes with legal assistance regarding professional contracts, cooperation with promoters, preparation of documents for international fights, protection of athletes’ rights, and other matters arising throughout their professional careers.

WBC Ukraine also serves as a communication platform connecting Ukrainian boxers, promoters, and the World Boxing Council, helping athletes integrate into international professional boxing and access new opportunities for career development.

WBC University — Developing Professionalism

Professional education for ring officials has become another important area of WBC Ukraine’s activities.

Over the past five years, Ukrainian judges and referees have regularly participated in training through WBC University, learning modern judging standards, international World Boxing Council rules, fight safety requirements, and the specifics of officiating professional boxing bouts.

Participants in the educational programs analyzed complex judging situations, improved their round-scoring skills, practiced refereeing in unusual situations, and studied modern international approaches to professional boxing.

An important result of this work was international WBC certification, which confirmed the high level of professional training of Ukrainian judges and referees and provided them with opportunities to officiate official bouts under the auspices of the World Boxing Council.

Athletes’ Mental Health

The development of modern sport is impossible without attention to athletes’ psychological well-being.

For this reason, WBC Ukraine, together with WBC University and WBC Cares, joined an international initiative dedicated to boxers’ mental health.

As part of the project, international educational events were held with the participation of WBC Ukraine President Mykola Kovalchuk, former WBC World Champion Viktor Postol, American psychotherapist Dr. Haris Jensen, as well as representatives of the World Boxing Council.

During the meetings, participants discussed athletes’ psychological resilience, stress management, coping with emotional pressure, the importance of maintaining mental health, and the role of psychology in achieving high-level sporting results.

WBC Cares Ukraine — When Boxing Becomes Support

Following the beginning of russia’s full-scale invasion, WBC Ukraine’s activities gained another extremely important dimension. Alongside the development of professional boxing, the organization became actively involved in the international humanitarian program WBC Cares, aimed at supporting people most affected by the war.

Over the years, the WBC Ukraine team has organized charity events, supported children affected by the war, visited children’s hospitals, medical and rehabilitation centers, and participated in humanitarian initiatives and social projects aimed at helping Ukrainians. The work of WBC Cares Ukraine has become an integral part of the office’s activities, as people have always been at the heart of the World Boxing Council’s values.

Supporting Ukrainian Veterans

One of the most important projects in recent years has been the development of adaptive boxing in Ukraine.

In 2026, WBC Ukraine, together with WBC Adaptive Boxing, WBC Cares Ukraine, and the Ministry for Veterans Affairs of Ukraine, launched a new stage of cooperation by signing a Memorandum on the development of adaptive boxing for war veterans. The document became a natural continuation of the work that began with the first WBC Adaptive Boxing master class in Ukraine, held with the participation of international experts.

The partnership aims to establish a systematic program of physical and psychological rehabilitation for veterans through sport, implement international experience, train coaches, develop adaptive boxing, and create new opportunities for the social integration of Ukrainian defenders.

WBC Ukraine believes that boxing can not only create champions but also help people find the strength to begin a new chapter in their lives.

Ukraine in the Global WBC Family

Throughout all five years, WBC Ukraine has actively represented Ukraine on the international stage.

The organization’s President, Mykola Kovalchuk, participates annually in the World Boxing Council Conventions — the main international forum of global professional boxing, where strategic decisions regarding the development of the sport are made.

Participation in WBC Conventions is an important part of the Ukrainian office’s work. There, WBC Ukraine represents the interests of Ukrainian athletes, supports Ukrainian promoters, participates in the work of specialized committees, discusses the future development of professional boxing, and facilitates the organization of international title fights involving Ukrainian boxers.

Through the systematic work of the Ukrainian office, more and more Ukrainian athletes are gaining opportunities to compete in international ranking fights, challenge for prestigious World Boxing Council titles, and represent Ukraine at the highest professional level.

Five Years of Comprehensive Work

Today, WBC Ukraine is much more than an organization that stages title fights.

Over five years, the Ukrainian office has developed into a platform that takes a comprehensive approach to professional boxing: supporting athletes and promoters, providing legal assistance to boxers, training judges and referees according to international standards, implementing educational programs, promoting a culture of safe boxing, supporting athletes’ mental health, developing adaptive boxing, and carrying out major social and charitable initiatives.

People have always remained at the center of this work — athletes, coaches, ring officials, veterans, children, and everyone whose work contributes to the development of Ukrainian boxing.

As it marks the first five-year anniversary of its activities, WBC Ukraine expresses its sincere gratitude to World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman, the WBC Board of Governors, committee chairs, international partners, and the entire World Boxing Council family for their trust, support, and many years of cooperation.

During the most difficult times for Ukraine, the World Boxing Council has not stood aside. The organization has consistently supported Ukrainian athletes, implemented humanitarian projects, helped develop WBC Cares, WBC University, and Adaptive Boxing programs, opened new opportunities for Ukrainian boxers, and once again demonstrated that the WBC is not only about championship belts — above all, it is about people.

Special gratitude goes to Mauricio Sulaiman for his personal support of Ukraine, his continued attention to the development of WBC Ukraine, his belief in Ukrainian athletes, and his willingness to support our country even during the most difficult times. His leadership, humanity, and sincere support have become an important source of strength for the Ukrainian boxing community.

New Chapters Ahead

The first five years have laid a strong foundation for the future development of WBC Ukraine.

Ahead are new champions, new international titles, new educational programs, major social initiatives, and new opportunities for Ukrainian athletes. WBC Ukraine will continue working to ensure that Ukrainian professional boxing develops in accordance with the highest global standards and that Ukrainian athletes proudly represent their country on the international stage.

Together with the global World Boxing Council family, we continue to write a new history of Ukrainian professional boxing — a story built on professionalism, mutual support, development, and an unwavering belief in Ukraine’s victory.
